02/26/2005: "BD/AD"

For better or for worse, I live my life in two time frames--Before Deadline and After Deadline. Sort of sad but true. And it's always at this time, a few days before the book absolutely has to be off of my desk and on my editor's, that I start running the mental AD list.

Books I plan to read. Movies I want to see. Stuff around the house--paint my bedroom, de-clutter a couple of closets, rake the back yard. See my hairdresser for much-needed root touch-up. Yes, shockingly enough, my hair is not naturally red with blond bangs. shocked Finish reading and scoring RITA books. Re-connect with friends and family. Balance my check book. (It never happens, but I like to pretend I'm going to when I have time big grin) Haul boxes of donation books to library. Take dogs in for shots and grooming. Volunteer at my daughter's school. Work on workshop presentations.

When I finish this book I'm going to get it all done because I'll have my life back, the book will no longer own me. Uh-huh. Sure. Right until I get those revisions....

Okay, but when you're done, do you actually do all those things? This sounds JUST like me, but when I'm done I'm so exhausted I collapse - and then it's time to start another book! Whine!

You caught me out, Alison! I never get them all done. LOL! It's just some game I play in my head.

The day I send it off, I'm euphoric, riding some crazy high and full of energy. Then I'm into serious crash and burn. And yeah, then it's time to start another book or revise the one I just turned in.

But the RITA scores and the roots--they're top of my list. hehe

"Some men admit they avoid confrontation (about breaking up) because they’re afraid we’ll cry. Of course we’ll cry; we cry at Hallmark commercials. What they don’t understand is that we’re not crying because of them, we’re crying because now we have to get naked in front of someone else.”
